An umbrella policy protects people from lawsuits after your liability coverage has run out. For example, it could cover damage or injury caused by you, a dependent or pet. Umbrella policies tend to be cheaper because they kick in only after the current liability coverage has run out. So, should you get one? It just depends on the likelihood that you could be sued, your aversion to risk and your assets.
